
If water is coming from your RV faucets but the flow is much weaker than normal, the problem is often a restriction somewhere in the water system.
Before blaming the water pump or replacing plumbing components, start with the simple things.
One of the most common causes of low water flow I see in RVs is also one of the easiest and cheapest to fix: plugged faucet aerators.
Sediment, mineral deposits and small pieces of debris can collect in the screens at the end of a faucet and dramatically reduce the amount of water coming out.
This guide will help you determine whether the restriction is at one fixture, affects the entire RV, or occurs only when using city water or the fresh-water pump.

Start Here:
Before taking anything apart, determine where the low flow is happening.
Only one faucet has low flow?
Start with the faucet aerator.
If other faucets have good flow, the RV’s main water supply is probably fine.
Only the shower has low flow?
Check the shower head for mineral buildup or debris.
Every fixture has low flow?
The restriction is probably farther upstream.
Determine whether the problem happens:
- Only on city water
- Only when using the water pump
- On both water supplies
That distinction can quickly narrow down where to look.
Safety Stop
Turn off the water pump and disconnect the city-water supply before opening plumbing connections, removing filters or working on the water system.
Release water pressure by opening a faucet before disconnecting pressurized plumbing components.
If you’re working around the water pump, keep water away from electrical connections and equipment.
Check First: Remove the Faucet Aerator
If one faucet has noticeably lower flow than the others, this should be your first check.
Unscrew the aerator from the end of the faucet.
Then briefly run the water with the aerator removed.
Flow returns to normal
You’ve probably found the problem.
Check the aerator for:
- Mineral deposits
- Sediment
- Small pieces of plastic
- Plumbing debris
- Scale
- Debris trapped against the screen
Clean the aerator thoroughly and reinstall it, or replace it if necessary.
Flow is still poor
The restriction may be inside the faucet, supply line or another component supplying that fixture.

Plugged faucet aerators are one of the most common causes of low water flow I’ve encountered in RVs.
They’re also extremely easy to overlook.
Before assuming there’s something wrong with the water pump or RV plumbing, I like to remove the aerator and test the faucet without it. It’s a quick check that can sometimes solve the entire problem in less than a minute.
Step 2: Compare the Other Fixtures
Don’t judge the entire RV’s water pressure from one faucet.
Check several fixtures individually:
- Kitchen faucet
- Bathroom faucet
- Shower
- Outside shower, if equipped
You’re looking for a pattern.
One fixture has low flow
The problem is probably localized to that fixture.
Check:
- Faucet aerator
- Shower head
- Faucet cartridge
- Supply line
- Local shutoff valve, if equipped
All or most fixtures have low flow
Now you know the problem probably isn’t a single faucet.
Move upstream and determine whether the problem occurs on city water, the water pump, or both.
Step 3: Compare City Water With the Water Pump
If possible, test the RV using both water sources.
Connect the RV to city water and check several fixtures.
Then disconnect the city-water supply and test the same fixtures using water from the fresh-water tank and pump.
Flow is good on city water but weak with the pump
The problem is probably on the fresh-water/pump side of the system.
Check:
- Pump inlet strainer
- Fresh-water tank supply
- Suction-side restrictions
- Kinked plumbing
- Water pump performance
But there’s an important distinction here.
Is the pump actually priming?
If the pump primes, builds pressure and shuts off normally, but water flow remains weak, continue troubleshooting the low-flow problem.
If the pump runs continuously and doesn’t prime or produce usable water pressure, you’re no longer dealing with the problem covered by this article.

Step 4: Check the Water Pump Strainer
If flow is poor only when using the water pump — but the pump is successfully priming — inspect the pump’s inlet strainer.
Turn the pump off and release pressure before opening the strainer.
Look for:
- Sediment
- Tank debris
- Plastic shavings
- Mineral buildup
- A partially blocked screen
Clean the strainer and reinstall it carefully.
Make sure the strainer housing seals correctly. A damaged seal or loose connection on the suction side of the pump can introduce air into the system and create additional problems.
Step 5: Check for a Restricted Pump Supply
If the pump primes normally but produces weak flow throughout the RV, inspect the accessible plumbing between the fresh-water tank and pump.
Look for:
- Kinked tubing
- Partially closed valves
- Restricted fittings
- Damaged tubing
- Debris in the pump inlet
If the pump isn’t able to receive enough water, its output can be reduced even though the pump itself is still operating.

Step 6: If Flow Is Low Only on City Water
If the water pump provides good flow but city water doesn’t, concentrate your troubleshooting outside the RV and around the city-water inlet.
Start with the campground or home water supply.
Then work toward the RV.
Check the:
- Water source
- Fresh-water hose
- Pressure regulator
- Inline water filter
- City-water inlet

Make sure it isn’t kinked or crushed.
Check the pressure regulator
A regulator that’s set too low — or one that has become restricted internally — can reduce flow throughout the RV.
If you use an adjustable regulator, verify that it’s adjusted appropriately.
Check external filters
A dirty inline water filter can create a significant restriction.
If the filter is due for replacement, don’t overlook it just because water is still passing through it.
Step 7: Check Whole-RV Water Filters
Some RVs have a whole-RV filtration system.
As the filter collects sediment and contaminants, resistance to water flow increases.
This can cause:
- Weak faucets
- Weak shower flow
- Reduced flow throughout the RV
A filter becomes especially suspicious if water flow gradually became worse over time rather than suddenly changing.
Inspect or replace the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If the system is designed to allow safe bypassing of the filter, comparing flow with and without the filter can also help identify a restriction.
Step 8: Check Plumbing Valves
RV water systems can contain several valves depending on their design.
These may include:
- Winterization valves
- Tank-fill valves
- City-water/fresh-water selector valves
- Water-system control-panel valves
Make sure the appropriate valves are fully in their normal operating positions.
This is particularly worth checking after:
- Winterization
- De-winterization
- Plumbing repairs
- Water-filter replacement
- Work around the water pump
A valve that’s partially closed can restrict water without completely stopping it.
Step 9: Look for Kinked or Restricted Water Lines
If low flow affects the entire RV on both water sources and you’ve eliminated the easier possibilities, inspect accessible plumbing.
Look for:
- Kinked PEX or flexible tubing
- Crushed lines
- Partially closed valves
- Debris inside fittings
- Damaged plumbing
- Restrictions created during previous repairs
If the problem started immediately after plumbing work, pay particular attention to the area that was recently serviced.

Most Common Causes of RV Low Water Flow
1. Plugged Faucet Aerator
If only one faucet is affected, check this first.
It’s simple, inexpensive and extremely common.
2. Plugged Shower Head
Mineral deposits and debris can restrict the small passages inside an RV shower head.
3. Dirty Water Filter
A restricted filter can reduce water flow throughout the RV.
4. Pressure Regulator Restriction
If the problem occurs only on city water, check the regulator.
5. Plugged Water Pump Strainer
If the problem occurs only when using the fresh-water tank, inspect the pump strainer.
6. Partially Closed Valve
This is especially worth checking after winterization or plumbing work.
7. Kinked or Restricted Plumbing
A physical restriction can reduce the amount of water reaching one or multiple fixtures.
8. Weak Water Pump
A deteriorating pump can produce inadequate flow, but don’t make the pump your first suspect.
Eliminate the simple restrictions first.
When the Water Pump May Actually Be the Problem
If low flow occurs only while using the fresh-water tank, the pump itself eventually becomes a possibility.
Before replacing it, confirm that:
- The pump is successfully priming
- The fresh-water tank has adequate water
- The inlet strainer is clean
- The pump’s supply line isn’t restricted
- Valves are correctly positioned
- The plumbing downstream isn’t restricted
If all of those checks pass and the pump still can’t provide adequate flow, further pump testing may be necessary.
When to Book Service
Consider having the RV professionally diagnosed if:
- Low flow affects the entire RV and you can’t find the restriction
- The water pump primes but can’t produce adequate flow
- You suspect a hidden plumbing restriction
- A valve or plumbing component isn’t accessible
- Water is leaking inside the RV
- The city-water system has poor flow despite adequate incoming pressure
- The problem remains after filters, aerators and obvious restrictions have been eliminated
Service Call Prep
Before bringing the RV in, make a few notes.
Determine:
- Which fixtures have low flow
- Whether removing an aerator improves the flow
- Whether the problem occurs on city water
- Whether it occurs with the water pump
- Whether the water pump primes and shuts off normally
- Whether filters have been checked or replaced
- Whether the RV was recently winterized or de-winterized
- Whether any plumbing work was recently performed
This information can help a technician narrow down the problem much faster.
Why RV Water Flow Becomes Restricted
RV plumbing systems use relatively small fittings, screens, valves, filters and water lines.
It doesn’t take a large amount of debris to noticeably reduce flow.
Sediment from campground water, mineral deposits, debris from the fresh-water tank and material introduced during plumbing work can eventually collect in:
- Faucet aerators
- Shower heads
- Filters
- Pump strainers
- Valves
- Small plumbing passages
That’s why weak water flow doesn’t automatically mean an expensive component has failed.
Sometimes the problem is nothing more than a tiny plugged screen at the end of the faucet.
