
Your RV water pump is running, but when you open a faucet, you get little or no water pressure.
The good news is that a running pump gives us an important clue: the pump is getting power and trying to move water. Now we need to figure out why that water isn’t reaching the faucets properly.
In many cases, the problem is something relatively simple, such as a plugged pump sediment filter, an empty fresh water tank, or a restriction in the plumbing.

Most of the checks in this guide are simple plumbing inspections, but there are a few precautions to take before you start.
Turn the water pump off before opening the pump sediment filter, disconnecting plumbing fittings, or working around the pump.
If the RV is connected to city water, shut off the city water supply and relieve the pressure by opening a faucet before disconnecting any plumbing.
Water pumps are electrical devices. If you find damaged wiring, melted connections, signs of overheating, or water around electrical components, stop troubleshooting and have the problem inspected by a qualified RV technician.
Don’t allow the pump to run for an extended period if it isn’t moving water. Brief operation while troubleshooting is normally necessary, but continuously running a dry pump can eventually damage it.
Start Here: Is the Problem Everywhere?
Before taking anything apart, open several fixtures.
Check:
- Kitchen faucet
- Bathroom faucet
- Shower
- Outside shower, if equipped
Low or no pressure everywhere
If every fixture has the same problem, concentrate on the water supply, pump, sediment filter and plumbing leading to or from the pump.
Low pressure at only one faucet
The pump probably isn’t the problem.
Remove and inspect the faucet aerator.
Sediment and debris can plug the small openings in an aerator and dramatically reduce water flow.
Clean the aerator and try the faucet again.
Important clue: If the same faucet has poor pressure when connected to city water, the restriction is probably at the faucet or somewhere in that fixture’s plumbing — not the water pump.
Step 1: Check the Fresh Water Tank
It sounds obvious, but verify that the fresh water tank actually contains water.
Don’t rely entirely on the tank monitor.
RV tank sensors aren’t always accurate.
If the tank is empty or nearly empty, the pump may draw air instead of water.
Add some water and test the pump again.
Step 2: Check the Pump Sediment Filter
This is one of the first things I check when an RV water pump is running but producing poor water pressure.
Many RV water pumps have a small sediment filter or strainer installed on the inlet side of the pump.
Its job is to catch debris before it reaches the pump.
Over time, that screen can become plugged.
Turn the pump off before opening the filter.
Remove the filter housing and inspect the screen for:
- Sediment
- Plastic shavings
- Tank debris
- Mineral buildup
- Other contamination
Clean the screen thoroughly, reinstall it and make sure the housing seals correctly.
Turn the pump back on and check the water pressure.
If pressure returns, you’ve found the problem.
Step 3: Is the Pump Primed?
Listen to the pump while a faucet is open.
If the pump runs continuously but doesn’t seem to move any water, it may not be primed.
This is especially common after:
- Winterization
- Draining the fresh water tank
- Plumbing repairs
- Replacing the water pump
- Allowing the tank to run completely dry
Make sure there is enough water in the fresh tank.
Open a cold-water faucet and allow the pump a short period to pull water through the system.
Once water begins flowing steadily, close the faucet and see whether the pump builds pressure and shuts off.
Don’t leave a pump running for an extended period if it isn’t moving water.
Step 4: Check the Winterization System
If the RV has recently been winterized or de-winterized, check the winterization valves.
Many RVs have a valve near the pump that allows the pump to draw RV antifreeze from a hose instead of drawing water from the fresh water tank.
If this valve is left in the winterizing position, the pump may simply pull air through the antifreeze hose.
Check that:
- The winterization hose is shut off.
- The fresh water tank supply is open.
- Any other water-system valves are in their normal operating positions.
A valve in the wrong position can make a perfectly good pump appear to have failed.
Step 5: Try City Water
If you have access to a city water connection, it can be a useful diagnostic test.
Connect the RV to city water and check the faucets.
Good pressure on city water
If pressure is normal throughout the RV on city water but poor when using the pump, concentrate your troubleshooting around:
- Pump sediment filter
- Pump inlet plumbing
- Fresh water tank supply
- Winterization valves
- Pump itself
Poor pressure on both pump and city water
If the same fixtures have poor pressure on both systems, the pump probably isn’t the cause.
Look for restrictions farther downstream.
Possible causes include:
- Plugged faucet aerators
- Plugged shower head
- Plumbing restrictions
- Partially closed valves
This simple comparison can save a lot of unnecessary pump troubleshooting.
Step 6: Check the Pump’s Inlet Side
If the sediment filter is clean and the valves are positioned correctly, inspect the plumbing between the fresh water tank and pump.
The pump needs an unrestricted supply of water.
Look for:
- Kinked hoses
- Collapsed hoses
- Loose fittings
- Damaged seals
- Blockages
A loose fitting on the suction side can be particularly troublesome.
The connection doesn’t necessarily have to leak water.
Because this part of the system is under suction while the pump operates, a loose connection can allow the pump to pull air into the plumbing instead.
The pump may continue running but struggle to prime or build pressure.
Step 7: Does the Pump Build Any Pressure?
At this point, pay attention to exactly what the pump does.
Pump runs and water flows, but pressure is weak
Possible causes include:
- Partially plugged sediment filter
- Restriction in the inlet plumbing
- Low water level
- Pump wear
- Plumbing restriction
Pump runs continuously with little or no water
Think about:
- Pump not primed
- Empty tank
- Winterization valve position
- Air leak on the suction side
- Blocked tank supply
- Pump failure
Pump builds pressure and shuts off normally
If the pump shuts off and holds pressure normally, but one fixture still has poor flow, the problem is probably at that fixture rather than the pump.
When the Water Pump May Be Bad
RV water pumps do wear out.
Internal diaphragms, valves and other components can eventually prevent the pump from moving enough water or developing normal pressure.
But I wouldn’t replace the pump simply because it runs without producing good pressure.
First eliminate the simpler possibilities:
- Fresh water supply
- Sediment filter
- Aerators
- Winterization valves
- Pump priming
- Inlet restrictions
- Air leaks
A new pump won’t fix a plugged filter or a valve that’s in the wrong position.
When to Stop and Get Help
Consider having the RV inspected if:
- The pump runs but won’t draw water after the basic checks.
- You suspect a hidden plumbing restriction.
- The pump repeatedly loses prime.
- You find leaking or damaged plumbing that’s difficult to access.
- The pump won’t build enough pressure despite having a good water supply.
- You’re uncomfortable opening or modifying the RV’s plumbing system.
What to Tell the Technician
Before booking service, note:
- Whether the pump runs continuously or eventually shuts off
- Whether any water comes from the faucets
- Whether every fixture is affected
- Whether pressure is normal on city water
- Whether the sediment filter was cleaned
- Whether the RV was recently winterized or de-winterized
- Whether the problem started suddenly or gradually
Those details can significantly narrow down the problem.
Why This Happens
An RV water pump doesn’t just need electricity.
It needs a steady, unrestricted supply of water on its inlet side and must be able to build pressure on its outlet side.
A restriction before the pump can prevent it from getting enough water.
A restriction after the pump can reduce flow at the fixtures.
And an air leak on the suction side can prevent the pump from properly priming.
That’s why where the pressure disappears is often more important than simply knowing that the pump is running.
